As parents, we’ve all been there. Tapping our foot repetitively during an important meeting to try and stay awake. Blasting the music in the car to keep from nodding off after a late night up with a sick child. Or, taking a warm bath to soothe frenzied nerves before going to bed. It’s called self-regulation — and most of us engage in these alerting or soothing activities several times a day. Turns out kids need to self-regulate, too. These resources make it clear that North Carolina’s early education system is the backbone of our economic infrastructure! Early education in our state:

Allows parents to work, earning nearly $12.5 billion each year for our state.

Generates $1.7 billion annually.

Employs 50,000 North Carolinians.

And most importantly, it builds human capital, laying the groundwork for the state’s future success.

Experts agree that kids should watch no more than one or, at most, two hours of TV a day. Your job as a parent is to make sure this limited quantity of TV is maximum quality.

Of course, you can’t go wrong with a classic like Sesame Street (which first aired in 1969). But there are other gems you may not be so familiar with. Here are our picks.
